Who are the Humanists?
In various conversations over the last month it has come to my attention that not many people know what a Humanist is. In an effort to clarify and empower you with some knowledge I will breakdown what you should know about Humanists. General Humanist Beliefs Humanists believe a person has the right and the responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives. Humanists are committed to each human being’s ability to have a say in the choices and access resources that enable them to have a good life. A Humanist understands a person’s free agency and ability to demonstrate their talents is a fundamental part of a developing…

Action is Required: Part 2
There is a lot of controversy about what “Defund the Police” means. To the point where I thought about taking down the last post. Because the way I wrote that, if I am being completely honest with myself, it was polarizing. It assumes all police officers and their departments are to blame for the current problems we are facing. When we champion only one idea as a simple chant, we ignore the complexity of our humanity. We lash out at everyone when we wage what we think is a righteous war. And isn’t every cause we are each fighting righteous to us? The problem with any justified rage is the…

Action is Required
Hasan Minhaj released this special on why this is an issue we cannot ignore. It is not just a rant it is a call to action. Specific actions we need to focus on. Actions that all Americans can get behind. If you are not willing to address the following, you are part of the problem. Even if you were part of the problem before what matters now is that it is time to be a part of the solution. 1. Policy Immunity The problem is when a crime is committed by police officers they are treated differently than the average citizen. This doesn’t reflect our American values. No one is…

Is there a right way to protest?
The influence of protests has been a life long interest of mine. I often found Martin Luther King Jr. inspiring because he understood the way violent protests would be perceived. He understood human beings in ways that we have either forgotten or refuse to acknowledge. To me the most important thing he did was teach protesters what to expect, how to have courage in the face of overwhelming odds, and how to command presence through peace. That is over simplifying it, because he knew that not everyone was motivated by the same reasons. Which is why he continuously reminded and refocused people who participated and supported his movement. Sometimes when…

All Lives Matter
I took a break and came back online to an unexpected horror show. I cannot even bear to watch the video. Too much force was used and help isn’t coming. The man is dying an unnecessary death. I don’t need to see that to know that it was wrong. It makes me feel sick. When the Black Lives Matter and the Blue Lives movement started, didn’t we say the reason for the outrage was a fluke? How many more time does this need to happen before we realize it is an issue we NEED to address NOW. Here is why the move used on Floyd isn’t recommended. It can kill…
