    Mainz Walking Tour-Part Three

The Mainz Walking Tour continues! Walking around the corner we discovered St Christoph with its touching memorial reflecting on the victims of WWII and the destruction of Mainz. “To the dead in remembrance, to the living a reminder” Our path eventually brought us to Schillerplatz.  I’ll admit I have wandered across here a time or two before but now, with Kevin the Historian to guide us, I saw it through new eyes! Mainz Walking Tour-Part Two

The Mainz Walking Tour continues! With our awesome historian leading the way and pointing out neat finds in the nooks and crannies of Mainz, I found several places I wanted to come back and explore. Not too far from the Mainzer Dom we viewed where Gutenberg lived and died, the first printing press, and the Gutenberg Museum.  No pictures were allowed inside.  So instead, you get a picture of this statue. Mainz Walking Tour Part One

I recently decided to take advantage of the USO Wiesbaden’s walking tour in Mainz. While the main idea was to help orientate newcomers to the city, I had an ulterior motive in going. I wanted to spend some one-on-one time with my oldest son and I wanted to test out a newly acquired refurbished Panasonic DMC-G5 from kameraclub.de to see if it would work for me as a lightweight travel camera. I switched between a couple of settings in an attempt to get to know my camera a little better.  Overall I loved the details the camera was able to pic up even though I wasn’t shooting in RAW.  The only corrections…

    Wiesbaden 2017 Fasching Kinderfest Parade

Living in Germany you can’t help but notice that Fasching is on its way.  The question is where to go and what to see.  I was advised to find a place near the Rathaus. We left early to get a good spot.  We tried to stay warm with friends we ran into and entertained ourselves by looking at everyone’s costumes! The parade was announced and then we tried to survive being pelted with pocket tissues and candy! The crowd started to disperse but whoa… what’s going on here? Turns out the Fools have stormed City Hall and taken the key! Getting our share of the treasury, in chocolate gold Euros,…

    Eiswelt in Mainz

I finally figured out that when the weather has chilled with a wetness that makes us shiver but not quite cold enough for snow, then we can know for a certainty that winter has to come to Germany. Looking for a little winter cheer, the girls and I decided to join our local homeschool friends for a trip to Eiswelt in Mainz. The website and booklet, when translated, tells us that the ice sculpture exhibit is the work of nineteen international artists.  Several of which are world champions.  In four months they worked in cold conditions and diligently crafted from 500 ice blocks of different sizes, 200 tons of snow and 200 tons of ice,…
