Shopping for Spargel with Chef Jan

“You know what we should do?” “What?” “We should make a video-about spargel!” The idea seemed so easy at the time.  But when the Good Idea Fairy visits you and your friend in a charming unassuming French cafe, you take it all in with your cup of coffee and you get down to business making a video about a vegetable. Of course I have never done a video before, so there was a bit of a learning curve.  One where hours of frustration resulted.  Mostly with trying to get a highly recommended video editing program to work without crashing.  After losing hours of sleep I ended that relationship.  And since…

    Wiesbaden 2017 Fasching Kinderfest Parade

Living in Germany you can’t help but notice that Fasching is on its way.  The question is where to go and what to see.  I was advised to find a place near the Rathaus. We left early to get a good spot.  We tried to stay warm with friends we ran into and entertained ourselves by looking at everyone’s costumes! The parade was announced and then we tried to survive being pelted with pocket tissues and candy! The crowd started to disperse but whoa… what’s going on here? Turns out the Fools have stormed City Hall and taken the key! Getting our share of the treasury, in chocolate gold Euros,…

Chocolate Berlin Bomber Returns to Frankfurt

My thoughts are still on Berlin.  So it may come as no surprise to you why I was devastated to find out this morning that U.S. Army Air Corps Col. (Ret.) Gail Halvorsen returned to Frankfurt… 7 days ago. Any hope of meeting this amazing hero was non-existent because no one had notified the American military forces in the area.  At least not publicly. If you are not sure who he is or why he is important I would understand.  My earliest recollection was a byline in high school!  However we have a great library staff that constantly brings interesting subjects forward.  Which is why earlier this year around Memorial…

    First Day Hike

Across my Facebook feed popped up an invitation to start the New Year right with a little hike.  Back in the states hikers were heading out to take advantage of their local National Park terrain.  There was no reason we couldn’t participate in our own way, right here in Germany. Well there was one reason.  The weather was cold and overcast.  And wet.  Somewhere in my brain I heard a voice telling me to stay indoors.  A voice that reminded me that the warmth of my pajamas and comfort of my house was where it was at today. Then the voice inside my camera spoke up and urged me on.  How could…

2016 New Year Fireworks in Wiesbaden

Originally we had plans to be in Mainz this year.  Honey Bear ended up having to work New Year’s Day so we decided to stay close to Wiesbaden. I figure this would be a fun event to shoot.  Up to this point my attempts to take pictures of fireworks were total flops. Traditionally, we tend to resign ourselves to safely watch the fireworks from a distance.  The Neroberg hill or any open hilltop would have served us just fine.  This year we decided to celebrate in the city – at our own peril! I am simply amazed at how many people could purchase their own fireworks and then shoot them off in between…

4 Things about Community Events that Disappoint Me

In our wonderful community here in Wiesbaden, there is a regular opportunity to experience the diverse culture our military represents or encounters. When I first arrived in Germany I didn’t know there was anything but brats and fried potatoes to experience. Turns out it is as common as hot dogs and French fries back home, so making a decision on German Food on such a narrow idea is going to leave you disappointed. There is something else that disappoints me.  I really have waited to speak about what’s bothering me.  I wanted to give it a chance to tell me I was wrong.  To prove to me that it was more…
