Life in Korea: Speak up and Share What is Important to You!

Coming up on August 15th is Korea’s National Liberation Day. A day that marks Korean citizen’s freedom from Japan’s imperialist rule. In short, this is their Independence Day. So without a doubt this is a significant patriotic holiday for them. One that many Koreans choose to honor by speaking out about the human rights that matter to them. Which is why I think we have recently seen an increase of activity of demonstrators and protesters around Camp Humphreys. It might be pure coincidence with the current political climate, but it makes me think the timing is fitting. Perhaps our own Independence Day should be more than a day of fireworks…

Everything Shiny and New at Camp Humphreys!

Living overseas has its ups and downs. There is no guarantee of living comfortably because each person has different expectations. The only thing more difficult than adjusting to less than what was previously available to a person, is the promise of something better. It’s hope dangling on a string. Sometimes funding gets cancelled or reprioritized but we must make do with whatever leadership decides. It can be pretty agonizing as a military family to hear about plans that take seemingly forever to implement! That’s why right now it feels like everyone is getting tickets to Disneyland. That’s why we are celebrating with every Grand Opening that is happening here at…

    Life in a Military Penthouse

In my preparations for our move to Camp Humphreys I scoured the web for insight on what we needed to do for a smooth transition. I devoured every source of information I could find from the comfort of our home in Germany. Sig Flips the Table and the local Garrison’s social media accounts were very helpful. From the spouse network via Facebook I learned that there was no room on post and we would need to find a place off post. Finally! We would get the chance to live off the economy and immerse ourselves in the local culture! I felt ready to take on the realtors and had a…

The difference between bouncing back and plowing through

I recently reread a soundbite from Inc.com about 10 things mentally tough people do.  It was titled, Want to Raise Resilient Kids? A Navy SEAL Says Always Do This. You might have seen and thought it was insightful.  The first two times I read it I thought it was okay.  Mostly because the way it read was not about being mentally tough.  It wasn’t about resiliency. Even though the author of the article shared the definition of Resilience, as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness,” he neglected to show that any of the 10 things mentioned would increase someone’s ability to bounce back from hard times. More importantly while this was directed…

Thank you for the Good Stuff

I ran my personal race to finish this leg of the journey. I have been running it for what seems like a very long time.  Life has so many distractions that demand us to pay attention.  Some of those events gave little or no warning.  Still you keep going.  You find another way to make it happen. The moment that I thought would never come had arrived.  I finished and pressed submit.  As I waited for the confirmation I shared carrot cake pops with my family and then took them out for a little Trick or Treating around the block.  I snacked on candy corn and waited. Fall is not…
